A father, mother, and their young child tragically lost their lives in an accident at Secretariat, near the Otedola Bridge on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday. Two other people sustained critical injuries.

According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, the crash involved three vehicles: an Audi, a Toyota Camry, and a Toyota Corolla.

Preliminary investigations revealed that a heavily loaded truck, travelling at high speed, rammed one of the vehicles from behind, and the impact caused the car to collide with the other two vehicles, triggering a fatal chain-reaction crash.

The truck driver fled the scene immediately, leaving the victims behind. LASTMA operatives, working with emergency teams, rescued the injured and recovered the bodies of the deceased family members.

The critically injured were taken to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll-Gate, while the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit evacuated the deceased.

LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep sorrow over the “irreplaceable loss of an entire family” and prayed for comfort for the bereaved relatives. He also wished the injured a speedy recovery and praised the quick response of emergency responders.

Bakare-Oki emphasized that reckless speeding, especially by drivers of heavy trucks, remains a leading cause of road fatalities.

He urged all motorists, particularly heavy-duty truck drivers , to drive responsibly, follow speed limits, and adopt defensive driving practices to prevent such tragic accidents.
