The Lagos State Government has met with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to advance plans for deploying 2,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks as part of the state’s ongoing transport and logistics reforms.
The meeting, held on Monday at the Ministry of Transportation, brought together key government officials and NARTO executives led by the association’s National President, Alhaji Usman Yusuf Lawal.
Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, said the Sanwo-Olu administration remains committed to cleaner and safer mobility.
He added that talks are underway with financial institutions to expand funding opportunities for transport operators, describing the introduction of CNG vehicles as a significant step toward cutting emissions and modernising logistics operations.
NARTO President, Alhaji Lawal, commended the government’s support and highlighted ongoing infrastructure upgrades, including rail expansion and the development of food distribution hubs.
He confirmed that Lagos has already taken delivery of 20 CNG buses under the Presidential Initiative on CNG, alongside newly supplied 50-seater LPC buses. According to him, CNG adoption has reduced transport costs by about 30%.
Senior Special Assistant on Transportation and Logistics, Hon. Hassan Adekoya, said the state is strengthening safety regulations in the haulage sector.
He revealed that Governor Sanwo-Olu has approved mandatory substance-abuse tests for truck drivers and free corrective eyeglasses for those with vision issues.
Adekoya also disclosed plans to phase out old, unsafe trucks and introduce cleaner, safer alternatives through an asset-financing scheme backed by UBA Bank, which will allow operators to acquire new trucks under structured repayment plans.
